Your first ASN

Your first BGP session should be boring. We'll help make it that way.Providers, hosts and businesses getting their own ASN and address space.

Sound familiar?

  • One upstream, and no way to fail over.
  • Provider addresses you can't take with you.
  • BGP policy learned from forum posts at 2am.

How it works

  1. Plan your resources

APNIC membership, your ASN and your address space.

  2. Publish ROAs and route objects

So the rest of the internet believes your announcements.

  3. Design your routing policy

Filters, preferences and failover, written down before go-live.

  4. Bring up your first session

Transit from AS152590, full table, IPv4 and IPv6.

  5. Add more

A second upstream and exchange peering, when you're ready.

What you'll need

The pieces of a first BGP setup, in the order most people get them.

  • APNIC membershipYour registry account. Fees are on APNIC's own pricing page.Source
  • An ASNYour network's identity in BGP.
  • Address spaceIPv4 prefixes no more specific than /24 and IPv6 prefixes no more specific than /48 are generally accepted for global routing. Eligible APNIC members can apply for up to a /23 of IPv4 under its policy; existing resources and authorised transfers are other options.Source
  • ROAsSigned records saying your ASN may originate your prefixes.
  • IRR route objectsSo upstreams and peers can build filters for you.
  • A router and a routing policyFilters, preferences and failover, written down before go-live.

Questions

Do we need our own router?

Yes. We can help you choose it and configure it.

What if we get it wrong?

That's what the planning is for. We'll review it with you before anything goes live.

Can you be our first upstream?

Yes. Full-table transit from AS152590, and help planning a second upstream when you're ready.

Do we need a data centre?

Your router needs to be somewhere with a port to us. Shared colocation next to the network is the simplest start.
